Hancock: The foul mouthed booz drinking superhero did good business in the box office

Once again, Will Smith proves that he is one of the big buck makers of Hollywood. Smith’s latest movie, Hancock, did an impressive $66 million business on its opening day in the last weekend. According to Sony’s estimate, Hancock collected around $107.3 million since it’s opening on July 1, 2008. The July 4th weekend was a big boost for the movie. For Will Smith, this is his fifth hit movie released on July 4th followed by Men in Black, Men in Black Alien Attack, Independence Day and Wild Wild West. Mosco News reports:

"Will Smith, Mom, apple pie and the Fourth of July. It doesn't get any better," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "People just so relate to him and the characters that he plays. They totally embraced it as something different, something fresh."

The previous weekend's top flick, the Disney-Pixar animated tale "WALL-E," slipped to second place with $33.4 million. Its 10-day total is $128.1 million.

For the first time in month, overall business went downwards. Compared to 2007, the top 12 movies collected 4% lower. This year, the overall business stands at $158.7 million. Last year, Transformer was the big summer hit which collected $70.5 milion.
